My Review:
Before I bought this book, I did what every book buyer should do. I read the reviews on Goodreads. Actually that’s a small lie as I didn’t read the reviews until after I bought the book but in my defence, I had heard many good things about this book from many people who had read it. Anyway back to the point, this book sparked many controversial reviews on Goodreads and I think that was because of the way it was written. This book is told from the point of view of an amnesiac. This means that she has a lot of mental problems which can be visibly seen in the forms of writing the Lockhart uses. It’s written in more verse than paragraph occasionally which in my opinion really captures the accurate feeling of being in a unstable mental condition.
Some of my favourite things in this book are how realistic the family struggles are. The Sinclairs are rich and popular with the appearance that nothing ever goes wrong in their life. No financial problems causing al three daughters to migrate back to the island where they grew up. No mentally unstable child and definitely no crying children. The whole setup of the family makes me feel humbled how they can appear so perfect on the outside but completely collapsing on the inside. I also liked how the story progressed because it allowed you to experience the slow and sometimes painful recollections on amnesia. The whole story line is to find out what really happened in summer 15. This struggle to find out what happens is so teaching. I think that’s the best thing I can say about it. The story taught you many things throughout. the novel. For example, the family problems shows you that no one is perfect and if they appear like they are, something is going wrong. It also shows us the power of friendships and how strong the bond between two friends can be. I think that is all I can say however without spoiling the ending.
I have nothing bad really to say about it but if you don’t like the idea of writing in verse occasionally then this would be a book that got frequently annoying as it went on. But for me, I loved it so that doesn’t apply to me.
I would recommend this book to anyone who likes suspense and mystery books with different and unusual writing techniques. The recommended age group would also probably be at least 11 because of events that would confuse anyone younger than that.
