So as many of you will know, I have been posting for 2 and a half years. In that time, my posts have been very strict to books and book reviews and news in the book world. This fact was emphasized even in the title of my blog ‘Spikes Books’. Recently, I have been thinking about writing with more varied topics such as makeup, clothes, hairstyles, my thoughts on recent events and so on. I love nail art and creating new hairstyles as well and I was trying to think of a way to share that with you guys without having to create another blog. So, if this change goes ahead, I would be posting things for a wider audience range such as new movie releases, high-street makeup, clothing hauls etc. I would love to know what you guys think about this change and even some possibly new blog names that encompass a wider topic. Let me know in comments and I’ll talk to you guys soon!
Thanks for reading
Hallo meine Lieben und herzlich willkommen auf Spikes Books!
Hey people on the internet, so as you may be able to tell from the start of the post, I am in Germany at this precise moment in time so I have not been able to write a review however you will be getting some photos shortly!
Enjoy your holidays (if you’re like me) and if you aren’t on holiday then enjoy work/school/whatever you are all doing!
So at the moment I am on holiday in the Bahamas for a few weeks so I assure you that posts will be posted but if they arrive at different times in the week then don’t panic. I will try to keep to the schedule but occasionally I might be busy on those days. Now here’s my reading quotes of the week 🙂
Thanks for reading and possibly see you on Wednesday 🙂
Hello hello hello everyone,
Right, now I have a couple updates to mention. Firstly, as you can probably tell, I have changed the theme again. Sorry about the constant changes but this theme I think suits the blog very well as it is neat but also a little cute and girly at the same time. The previous theme was very sophisticated and serious (black to all you Harry Potter fans. Don’t worry if you don’t get it).
Secondly, on our Facebook page, I am looking to expanding a bit more. We currently have 3 admins and we are on the hunt for more. If you would like to be a Facebook admin, please message us through the Facebook page.
Third, also about the Facebook page is the lack of a cover. If you have any ideas, please message me through the Facebook page again, just so all the Facebook related messages can stay neatly in the same place.
And last, on a new page that will be going up over the next week, I will be doing a continual story. For those who are on Wattpad, it will be like that except it will be on the blog so it can be easier to find. On that page as well you will be able to comment ideas about how the story shall progress to make it a collaborative story.
Thanks for reading and I’ll talk to you all soon
Today is another book review day and I will be reviewing The Bunker Diary. Just as a warning, this book review is going to be containing SPOILERS because I am going to be rewriting the ending as I absolutely HATED it! Just a little heads up 🙂 Book title: The Bunker Diary Authors name: Kevin Brooks Publisher: Penguin Date Published: March 7th 2013 Number of pages: 268 Overall rating:
I can’t believe I fell for it.
It was still dark when I woke up this morning.
As soon as my eyes opened I knew where I was.
A low-ceilinged rectangular building made entirely of whitewashed concrete.
There are six little rooms along the main corridor.
There are no windows. No doors. The lift is the only way in or out.
What’s he going to do to me?
What am I going to do?
If I’m right, the lift will come down in five minutes.
It did. Only this time it wasn’t empty . . .
This book is written as a sort of journal style. All about a boy at age 17 getting kidnapped and put into a bunker with no idea who kidnapped him. Over time six other people join him.
Don’t get me wrong, I was all set to read this book at the beginning because I love the horror kind of books and I loved the cover and the blurb. It all got me so fascinated. While reading, I loved the variety of characters put into the book. I loved the range of behaviours and personalities and looks and responsibilities and lifestyles and colour and all that other good stuff. At first, I didn’t find it that scary. I thought it was just a kind of almost war-type fashion but as the book got further on, I found it did get a bit scary. I mean not like the gory kind because that’s fine, but in the way that it didn’t give out many details and left it all up to your imagination. If your imagination is anything as scary as mine is, this will probably scare you.
Now I haven’t seen a word that describes the thing I hate about this book as much as these: ANNOYING & FRUSTRATING. I 100%, absolutely, fully HATE the ending of the book. Beware of spoilers coming… NOW: Everyone dies! I mean like what is with that?! I have a much better way to end this book and here it is:
When I wake up, I’m lying on a green-brown coloured sofa with the TV in front of me. The news shows footage of the latest story. Some geeky looking guy with round glasses, braces and messed up, short blond hair had been arrested for kidnapping and murder. All of a sudden, all of the memories flow back into my head so quickly that it physically hurts. The months of waiting and waiting and starving and gassing and electrocuting and pain. All the people that surrounded me too. Particularly little 10 ear old Jenny. I looked back at the TV screen where the police were inside my bunker. Inside, they pulled out little Jenny’s body as well as the other people with me to. There was no story to this kidnapper. Just the scientifically proven fact that he was a psycho who believed he could play God and when the police took him, he froze and it took a week before they found us. Unfortunately, it was too late for most of us. Looking down at my wrists, a cannula was in one of them where they had me on a drip. I guess I had passed out from lack of food and water. Nothing that I do now will ever return them though. Nothing will replace the painful memories I have of those months. Even sentencing him to death will never bring back the faith I had in humanity.
Nothing will help me.
That was my alternate ending. Leave a message in the comments if you liked it. Overall, I give this 3.5 stars because it appeared to me that the author had an amazing story but didn’t know how to end it so killed off everyone. Defiantly a 15+ and recommended to people who like horrow stories.
Thanks for reading and I’ll talk to you soon
PS Not that I plan on putting spoilers in all my reviews because it doesn’t allow everyone to read the review, if I do though, what do you all think of the idea of password locking the post with the word ‘spoiler’ (obviously without the apostrophises). No capitals or spaces. That way it doesn’t tempt anyone to read the spoiler if they don’t want to. I’ve added a poll to the bottom of the post. I would love it if you would take 5 seconds of your time to fill it out. Thank you
So for some reason, the spotted background has come off of my blog. Not completely sure why but I think it’s because to change the background of this theme, I need to pay for it. So I am going to try and fine another theme and see if it works out. Look out for another post in a day or two asking if you like the new theme 🙂
Sorry this is a bit late but I have exams coming up next week and I spent a lot of last night revising. Anyway, it’s morning now on Tuesday but I’m still posting this up! Here is our reading quote for this week:
I have recently discovered the vlogbrothers and the great, amazing world of Nerdfighteria. I would be lying to say that I am not currently addicted to watching these videos. High five to all those other Nerd Fighters everywhere!
Thanks for reading
So I got back from my 2 day holiday early because it was raining so we couldn’t climb the mountain 😦 but when we got home (literally 20 minutes ago) I found an Amazon box sitting on the floor just inside the door (thanks to our neighbour). My 10 new books finally arrived! Here they are:
Just incase you can’t see all of the titles because the image isn’t of the best quality, the books include:
Prodigy and Champion By Marie Lu
Blue Moon, Dark Flame and Shadow Land By Alyson Noel
Delirium By Lauren Oliver
City of Bones By Cassandra Clare
The Elite By Keira Cass
Earthbound By Aprilynne Pike
Nil By Lynne Matson
These first five are the ‘stand alone books’. All of them except Nil are in a series of books but what I have done for all of them except The Elite is I have bought the first of the series so that I can see if I like it and then if I do, buy the rest of the series later on. The Elite is different because I had already bought the first book on my kindle a while ago and the last book The One is very expensive at the moment because it is only available in hard back so I am going to wait until a) it comes out in paperback or b) I can’t wait any longer!
This series is the 2nd, 3rd and 4th books in a series of six called The Immortals. My very close friend who always seems to be lending me books (you know who you are 😉 ) lent me the first and I fell in love with this series. I still need to do a review on the first book Evermore so look out for that at some point.
The other series of books that I bought the rest of is the Legend series. Sorry about the blurry image. Anyway, I bought this book because I saw it in a book store and I thought it would be a nice book. It is kind of a typical dystopian novel in the sense that you have a corrupt ruler, a good girl goes bad heroin and the bad boy. Even though it is typical and very similar to works like Divergent and The Hunger Games, it is a nice series to sit down and read as almost light reading.
There you go, there are my 10 new books. The book tower will be up tomorrow and look out for a review of both Evermore and The Bunker Diary (which I just finished yesterday) coming out soon.
I know I haven’t posted in a while and I am very sorry. I have been reading new books and fixing up the Spikes Books facebook page. We now have 2 admins. Me (~Spike) and ~The Crazy Fangirl. Be sure to check it out! So much better than just posting links 😛 Anyway here is my new schedule. I will be sure to stick with this one so, as you will see, I have changed it up a bit but it is a lot less packed in meaning that I can definantly do this one 🙂
Monday ~ Reading / any quote to get you through the week
Wednesday ~ Book Review
Friday ~Word of the week
Any day during the week ~Any news updates
As you can see, my break days are Tuesday and Thursday. This doesn’t mean I wont be posting on those days. Just that they don’t have any specific ‘activity’. The Facebook page will be updated regularly on any date. Quizzes will pop up at random times as well, just to keep things fresh.
Thanks for reading!
I know I haven’t been posting a lot recently but (and this I promise) I will get a schedule and to follow it, I will post it on a new page so, once again I’m sorry.
Thanks for keeping with me!
PS Has anyone seen the new Divergent movie??? It doesn’t come out in the UK until 4th April!!! 😦
